JUST HOW DID WE GET HERE?

I love Nigeria!! I really do love this country. And I am so sure many of you can relate. There has been instances in the past; elections, censuses, referendums, town hall meetings, etc. And we have just looked at these events and either smile or pass snide remarks like “oh they are about to share the national cake again”. It was different this time. Just all of a sudden, as if we were all tapped awake from a long trance, we became so hopeful for this country. What started like one of the normal discussions on jack’s app became a national movement. We could all relate to this struggle. Many of us had stories to tell; Stories which were not restricted to only the struggling Nigerian; as it has always been in the past. Some of the so-called elites could relate to it. The talks all centered on one thing, #EndSars, #EndPoliceBrutality. You could swear something as simple as ending a notorious unit of the police force would not bring this much violence throughout the country. T...

MEMOIRS FROM THE DARK SIDE

So I and one of my buddies were having this conversation on phone and he was telling me about some things going on in his life and what stuck was when he mentioned ‘Post NYSC Depression’. Advised me to enjoy my service year while it lasts, since I was still a Corper. But honestly, every single day I think about my life after service and what it is going to be like. I’m sure not everyone goes through this phase of depression but there are others that do and I don’t hope to go through that. I have a plan of where I wanna be in the next 5-10 years but right now I don’t have the resources and the qualifications needed for that attainment yet. So most of the time I’m faced with the question, how do I go about this? How do I get the money to do this? What should I be doing to gather resources to attain my dreams? For someone like me that isn’t business oriented, I get so fearful and worried. I see a lot of young people making headway with their skills and it feels like I’m lagging behind. So...

MAYBE WE SHOULD ALL BUY GUNS - THE ORTOM'S SUGGESTION.

Ever since Nigeria started its own version of democracy, right from the time of the man on the hilltop mansion to the one who initiated the idea of amnesty, the country has had to battle with all sorts of civil unrest. From fighters for the emancipation for the Niger delta to the bloodthirsty ones in the north east that have been at logger heads with education and everything it represents, for about a decade now.  Herdsmen clashes, Communal clashes between minority tribal groups, and occasional disturbances of small armed groups down south, all seems to serve as pointers to the fact that maybe the government itself is handicapped in dealing with insurgency in all the forms it has reared its head. Threatening to disrupt the Nigerian Project, if there is still something like that.  Different methods of engagement have been deployed all to no avail. Now more than ever, the threats faced by the country seems to be on the increase. Back to the brief picture of the transition of gov...

THE RAPE CULTURE

THE RAPE CULTURE      Started when women were perceived as nothing more than sexual objects to satisfy the needs of men with delusions of grandeur over the female gender. Started when females were brought up and thought to dress according to how she will be viewed by lecherous men in the streets. Started when sons were brought up with a sense of entitlement over the genitalia of their female counterparts.      Started among friends who would boast and make jest of the lusts they have satisfied whose sense of accomplishment lies in the number of females that have been overpowered by them. Started when females have resulted to labels to degrade a gender instead of focusing on the bad eggs. Started with a society who classified their females as second class citizens who deserve no respect       Started with a people who didn’t take responsibility and punished these traitors of human nature for their crimes against mankind. For they do not d...

Giving Birth Like Hebrew Women - Demystifying The Wild Thoughts Surrounding Childbirth in Nigeria

The above statement originated from the bible; when Hebrew women who were then in captive in Egypt were giving birth and as a result, boosting the ranks of the then Israelites despite the hardship meted upon them by their captors. As proverbial as this may seem, this statement is found at the very root of discrimination against women by virtue of the methods of delivery. This statement is common in the religious sphere of Nigeria. The country can be described as a deeply religious country. Although, the current realities of the failure of leadership and a below-par infrastructural development does not reflect this. Nigeria with about (40-45%) of the population identifying as Christians and 45% as Muslims respectively; according to the religious literacy project, is one place where the earlier highlighted statistics help in the country serving as one fertile breeding ground for religious manipulation.  This statement is one that has been used as a viable tool of shaming women wh...
