Giving Birth Like Hebrew Women - Demystifying The Wild Thoughts Surrounding Childbirth in Nigeria

The above statement originated from the bible; when Hebrew women who were then in captive in Egypt were giving birth and as a result, boosting the ranks of the then Israelites despite the hardship meted upon them by their captors. As proverbial as this may seem, this statement is found at the very root of discrimination against women by virtue of the methods of delivery. This statement is common in the religious sphere of Nigeria. The country can be described as a deeply religious country. Although, the current realities of the failure of leadership and a below-par infrastructural development does not reflect this. Nigeria with about (40-45%) of the population identifying as Christians and 45% as Muslims respectively; according to the religious literacy project, is one place where the earlier highlighted statistics help in the country serving as one fertile breeding ground for religious manipulation.  This statement is one that has been used as a viable tool of shaming women wh...

FLATTENING THE 'KERVE'

The Year 2020 started on a normal note; The festivities surrounding the first days of the year, the prayers, the expectations, the many watchwords and everything good for the new year. Well we are through with the first quarter of the year and damn, it has been one hell of a ride. Coronavirus termed Covid-19 was the newest virus we welcomed in the year, even as early as it is. By now, it needs no introduction; and by virtue of its influence on the global economy, the magnitude, its widespread nature and everything inclusive which has led the global apex body, the WHO to tag it  as a global pandemic. When it comes to the Nigeria state, there are always issues to write about; I was still working on this, when the minister for health made the very discouraging statement of he being oblivious of the hazards faced by medical practitioners in the line of combating the virus in Nigeria. The  Chief of staff to the president Mallam Abba Kyari was also not dead as a result complicatio...

SURVIVING THESE TIMES AS A CATHOLIC CHRISTIAN.

The Lenten period this year, the way it came so fast got me wondering; Oh! this is so out of the ordinary, when it was announced in church. As customary with the church's practices, the season  usually ends with the holy week which also include the Easter tridum; Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter vigil itself. Now, with the onslaught led by corona virus pandemic, This year's season has been one of my weirdest as a christian. I mean by now, we would be assembling firewood for the "the light of peter" at least so they call it in my local parish. This pandemic has robbed us of the indulgences we are opportune to make all through the season with a satisfying end on the night of Easter. At a point this week, I remember seeing one advertisement from one of the top airlines around. The Ad focused on how humans generally have taken all the normal  things we used to do pre- the corona virus pandemic for granted; and how they cannot get back to flying again. come to t...

REMEMBER VISION 2020, MIRAGE OR NOT?

In less than 24 hours, we would be crossing over into the year. In line with normal practices around here, shouts of joy would rent the air, crossover services in different churches, all sorts of animals would be slaughtered in the celebration of the new year. As a little boy, I remember how we would dance in circles in front of my father's house burning 'disco' as we knew it as then. The first days of the new year is something we all looked forward to. If you are conversant with the writings on this blog, you would know I write about politics most of the time. well, this is no exception. Although many have advised me to soft pedal on this a little. I will still not listen at least until things improve. I have been told on one occasion, Ayomaria 'Nigerians are not serious people' They really do not care about all these. But what choice do I have? If this is the only way I can get my thoughts out there, then so be it. Back to the main issue, I could remember hearin...

HAVE WE BEEN WRONG?

Nigeria since its democratic dispensation has been plagued with a never-ending crisis of leadership. the west African country has continuously experienced a progressive decline in its leadership over time. A cursory look at the major milestones through the past period has conspicuously highlighted this problem facing the nation. Here and there, are signs of neglect and the 'I don't care attitude' its leaders have shown over time. A below-par infrastructural development, a decrepit security framework, a fast collapsing educational system, and a healthcare sector which is consistently plagued by many woes, and generally low index figures of parameters for normal human living are obvious signs of this neglect.  To address all sides of the discussion; over time conscious Nigerians have continuously advocated for improved government attention; an issue which is still a mirage to date. There have also been calls for authorities to focus on the Nigerian project. Some of these ...

XENOPHOBIA : SIGNS OF THE FAILURE OF LEADERSHIP

'XENOPHOBIA' a word that has seen increased usage in the past week in social media spaces and similar gatherings; It is said to refer to the hatred of foreigners in a particular country. it is said to basically refer to the hatred of everything foreign. The latest of xenophobic acts have been carried out in South Africa against nationals of Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, etc. It seems the wave of attacks has been strategically orchestrated against anyone not South African. Videos, comments, arguments, and counter-arguments have pervaded the online space; with many condemning the actions, others offering suggestions and some other egg heads defending the mob action with all sorts of labels. "Nigerians in South Africa are criminals'' ''they engage in illicit trade and actions'' ''they are spoiling our land'' ''they should go back to their countries'' and all sorts of statements are top of the list of statements  I hav...

STATE POLICE; NEEDED NOW MORE THAN EVER!!

Nigeria as a country, with roughly about 180 million inhabitants, is a country that have in recent times bedeviled by numerous security challenges. Ranging from the fulani herdsmen's persistent rampage in nearly all the geopolitical zones of the big west African state, to the boko haram insurgency in the northern region, particularly the northeast. This group by their MODUS OPERANDI needs no introduction. Nevertheless, the persistent oil theft and militancy down south, and the independent fighters in the east are also worthy of mention in this context. In recent years, many reforms have been touted to curb this menace of insecurity. Ranging from the call for specified grazing zones,  ranches to be set up in the herdsmen's path of migration and many others. on the issue of boko haram, there have been calls for improved security funding, proper and efficient intelligence gathering, motivation for the soldiers of the Nigerian army and all other security agency involved. But as...
