THE HUMAN MIND: THE BIRTHPLACE OF THE MODERN WORLD.

image from payh.org It's the year 2032, 10 years after the first robot was launched, our planet earth has paved the way with the help of the human mind, for the machines who look like us but are devoid in what makes a human, human, to wine and dine amongst us. Yet there was a time the idea of robots was just a figment of an imaginative mind and this speaks of every technological material ever made Since the beginning of time, the human mind has continued to evolve, creating and giving life to ideas. On August 21, 2021 Elon Musk one of the richest men in the world, if not the richest, the hierarchy is dynamic, made an announcement about the launch of a Tesla bot prototype set to be released in the coming year. image from wired This announcement was met with a lot of mixed feelings on the internet, memes being circulated around. Despite this being another significant technological leap, I couldn't but wonder like so many others about what this signifies for the future since this ...

Patent Medicine Vendors And The Roles Of Pharmacists in Nigeria

They are everywhere, at the street corners, in the markets, etc. Try counting five (5) electric poles in your hood, and I can bet you would find at least one. They are scattered all across. It is business as usual, and many provision stores or better still, daily needs stores would usually at some point, start stacking bottles of paracetamol, tablets of vitamin C, antibiotics (Even though many do not know their uses, and would randomly combine it for those who are fortunate enough to seek for their counsel), cough syrups, etc. It is common to see packs of sugar, bottles of groundnut, with the items earlier mentioned.  For many, it is just business, nothing special. Here in Nigeria, you can make money from anything; even if they are medications with the ability to alter your mental state. No one cares; if these medications are stacked up, with no care for their shelf life, till the next person comes to buy them. The open drug markets further contribute to this menace. Take a trip to...

THERE IS FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN

Bukola Elemide (ASA) had no idea things would get this bad when she sang the song with the titled lyrics many years ago. But who can blame her? the Nigerian state has a knack for going deeper in search of the worst. It is almost like every administration tasks itself with finding new ways to frustrate Nigerians. The Locs-wearing singer probably had no single idea.  Remember when you are in a random discussion with a friend, or an acquaintance about the daily happenings in this country, how both of you are surprised things could get this bad, and wondering what would be the best way forward. You both argue back and forth, only to painfully sigh and resign with that phrase which is now becoming annoying. "Everything will be fine" Reality check!! with the way it is going now, everything will not be fine.  Citizens with their different purposes aims and objectives to achieve, people with vibrant dreams are being hacked down on a daily. Children, Men, and Women, fathers, and mothe...
BRIEF INSIGHTS INTO MENTAL HEALTH During my undergrad days as a student of Psychology I never really could comprehend the full grasp of mental health and the role it plays on the daily lives of people. I can say one of the reasons for this was that my courses were solely theoretical in nature, not much of practical, one of the many flaws of the educational system being run in the institution I attended but this isn’t our focus in this write-up. When I started coming in contact with Abnormal Psychology and started learning about mental disorders, I was fascinated and intrigued by the wide array of mental disorders present in our world today. I was aware of mental illness and what I thought it looked like judging from the mentally ill people that parade our locality but getting to work in a mental hospital made me understand that mental illness is more than that and entails a whole lot more than the physical appearance. In our world today mental health is no longer a new topi...

Nigeria and its almost forgotten public health care system

Good quality healthcare is a fundamental human right. Every living human is entitled, as it is no luxury; everyone should have access to this necessity. But sadly, that is not the case with Nigeria. The world health organization defines good health as the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.  Relate this description to the country's current healthcare situation and see if that is what we have. As far back as 2010, there have been talks about vision 2020, a design which was set to make nigeria one of the top 20 economies in the world by 2020. Now, it is the year 2021 and that vision is now a thing of the past. However, this is not the theme of discussion today; I have something on that already, you can just scroll back and read.  I would like to bring your attention to a part of that plan which harps on rural development. When it comes to the stratification of the nigerian society, the urban population of N...

I Like Rules, And I Also Don't Like Them

I honestly get the place of rules. I know how it helps to keep us all in check and how it is so consistent in holding up the barriers between sanity and the insanity of human society.  However, no one knows who makes the rules or sets the benchmark for considering that which is sane and insane. A topic for another day; But I want to hope you get what I am about to say in this column. Read through with an open mind. The human mind is wild. It is complex. And what it is capable of cannot be fathomed. Even the holy book says, "The heart of man is desperately wicked" maybe that is why we need rules to keep us in check. To hold up the structures of societal engagements and in the end, we have for ourselves a tolerable society. In recent times, that is being threatened, most especially with the new era of political correctness. So, what do we do? With political correctness, everyone wants to insert themselves into every conversation. Maybe in a bid to sound unique, or throw o...

OUR DIVERSITY IN WEAKNESS

" Our Strength in adversity, our health in weakness, our comfort in sorrow". These are some of the words out of a prayer booklet, one which I am very familiar with. However, thinking about it now, especially with the current circumstances, nothing of such rings true. An observer of the posts on this blog would have noticed nothing new has been posted since October. This is not due to the scarcity of content, but due to weakness on my part. There have been so many happenings, many things to talk about, and I have just being zapped of strength.  On most days, a whole lot of thoughts come to me and I just wave them off. What would I do, writing about the obvious problems is all I do. What would these words even do? Who would they change? Who listens to me? I am probably a small fry in the grand scheme of things. Nothing makes me feel more powerless than being a Nigerian Citizen. Everywhere you turn to, all you see are signs of ineptitude. A rot that is not going to stop any time...
